Personal Project in Progress

Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to witness 10th grade students sharing their progress so far on their personal project journey. I was amazed to see students sharing their work thus far. From blog posts, process journals in word, OneNote and in art books, research documents, social networking pages, surveys, posters, images and videos. I enjoyed listening to the students reflect on the process so far and look ahead to the next few months. From writing textbooks, to teaching dance, to saving endangered species, to helping people who are new to the Hanoi and UNIS community…our 10th graders are an amazing group of young people who are inquiring into some interesting topics. I can’t wait to see the final products!

September 5 Update: Blog vs Process Journal

Your next deadline is Wednesday September 7. Your project specifications are due on this day. 2.

Some of you need to have clarification regarding your monthly blog post and your process journal. Mr. Hamada clarified this for you on his blog on June 2, but for those of you that need reminding:

Everybody will be required to use a blog for monthly reflections. These reflections should be written in the last week of the month and will be used by your supervisor, your parents and the Ms. Law to get a good sense of your progress. In your monthly reflection you should be sure to use the category Personal Project (at least)and to include appropriate tags. You can include images or video of your product as you develop it, links to sources or other ideas, as well as answer some or all of these questions:

  • What did you accomplished this past month?
  • What new issues have come up?
  • How many meetings did you have with your supervisor? How did they go?
  • What will you try to accomplish in the coming month?

For your day-to-day process journal, you can choose format that suits your learning and working style. Choose a format that allows you to be organised and chaotic, tidy and messy, because you will be putting scraps as well as good documents into it. You therefore can choose from a number of formats:

  • Scrapbook
  • Notebook
  • OneNote
  • Wiki
  • Blog
  • Something else?

This means that each of you should, by now, have 3 (June, July, August) Reflective Blog posts that address the bullet points above PLUS a process journal which details the day-to-day work you are doing on your project. A few of you wish to use a blog as your process journal as well, that is fine, however you must still have a MONTHLY BLOG REFLECTION at the end of each month as well as your daily/weekly process journal entries. Please be sure to categorize your blog carefully so that it is easy to follow.

Personal Project here we come!

Over the past two weeks I have been working with the 9th graders at UNIS to introduce them to their personal project. It has been fun working with many of my old students and meeting lots of new faces.

After introducing them to their personal project we began by identifying problems and their personal connections to students. We also looked at how these topics might link to one of the areas of interaction. Yesterday students started thinking about the product that they would develop, as a solution to their personal project problem. I heard lots of amazing ideas from multi-media displays, websites, dance lessons and performances…the list goes on.

Students are now entering their personal project information in a survey so that we can match up teacher supervisors with each student by next week in order that at least one meeting can occur BEFORE the summer holidays (which is only 11 days away!!!).

I am looking forward to our next meeting on June 3!
